“Dress Your Family In Corduroy and Denim” by David Sedaris

My new job gives me the pleasure of a forty minute bus ride twice a day. I’ll be honest, reading on the bus makes me nauseous. And I am far too tired and irritable in the morning to listen to music on my iPod that I don’t like anyway. But did you know that there are people who read books TO YOU!? They’re called Audiobooks (formerly known as “books on tape”) and they’re awesome!!
This was my first foray into audiobooks. I wasn’t sure how it would go, but it was awesome. This was also my introduction to David Sedaris. If you enjoy his books, I HIGHLY recommend that you listen to the audio version. Sedaris narrates, and he has the greatest voice ever.
The book is about various parts of Sedaris’ life from childhood to adulthood. As I was listening to some of his family anecdotes, I wondered to myself how they would feel about this. Would they feel like he was just taking advantage and making them seem crazy? But as the book went on, I realized that his family sounds like some of the greatest people ever. An odd family is better than a boring family. Especially when they all actually seem close to each other, no matter how incredibly different they are.
In conclusion, this book is totally feel good. So many great stories, some are just plain hilarious, and some are super touching. The next time you find yourself sitting on a bus at 7:00 in the morning, making your way toward an 8 hour day of work. Pop in your earphones, listen to “Dress Your Family In Corduroy and Denim,” and smile away.
